ANOTHER FIRST IN NIGERIA: Uniportal VATS

Uniportal VATS (Video Assisted Thoracoscopic surgery) of the right Pneumonectomy

We successfully performed a Uniportal VATS (Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery)  right pneumonectomy in a 33yr old lady with Aspergilloma of the right lung.

This is a keyhole surgery of the chest or Minimally Invasive Surgery of the chest.

This is another first in the country.

This feat was achieved at the VATS Master class organized by the Association of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons of Nigeria (ACTSON) in collaboration with Tristate at Reddington team, with Prof Diego Gonzalez Rivas, which had in attendance cardiothoracic surgeons from all over Nigeria, at Reddington Hospital VI Lagos

Prof Diego is the world-renown propounder of Uniportal VATS.

VATS is a minimally invasive surgical technique that is used to diagnose and treat conditions in the human chest, as well as some procedures involving the heart, ribs, spine, and diaphragm.

It is a form of minimally invasive surgery in which the cuts (incisions) are smaller than in conventional open surgery.

The removal of a portion of a lung due to cancer is a common explanation for VATS.

A small video camera called a thoracoscope, as well as surgical instruments, are inserted into your chest through one or more small incisions in your chest wall during a VATS operation. The thoracoscope projects images of the inside of your chest onto a video monitor, allowing the surgeon to conduct surgery while being guided by the images during the procedure.

Lung surgery, including lung cancer surgery and lung volume reduction surgery, Pneumonectomies, Biopsies to detect lung cancer, mesothelioma, as well as other chest surgeries are all performed using the video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery technique
